The sad history about this song: It was the 6th of May 1942. The Second World War has long since reached the Balkans. A cold morning in Sarajevo, which as so often of dense fog covered war. The Croatian Ustasha police, which thanks to the Nazis areas availed outside the boundaries, led the campaign "Djurdjevdanski Uranak" (Awakening of St. Georg Tags) against the Serb population in Sarajevo by. At four clock in the morning the Serb prisoners arrived - columns composed of the barracks Jajce. To add them were prisoners from the camps Beledije, Cemalusa, from the city jail as well as from the barracks Vojvode Stepe. The columns met at the street Kulin Ban successive whence to them the "train of death" was waiting, which they from Sarajevo to the concentration camp Jasenovac should bring. This was around 3000 prisoners, mainly with young people. The train consisted of 15 carriages, each for around 40 soldiers were allotted. In a car up to 200 prisoners were crammed. It reigned chaos. This left only 200 who survived the whole ordeal in the Jasenovac concentration camp.Thanks to them we now know of this cruel incidents and the song. The art historian and professor from Sarajevo Zarko Vidovic was one of the survivors of the Jasenovac concentration camp. Due to its traditions composed Goran Bregovic 1988, the song of the prisoners - "Djurdjevdan je" (It is St. George's Day).
